Monster Phonics

We use Monster Phonics at our school, which is an interactive, fun way of learning our letter sounds to help us to read and write. Daily, discrete phonics lessons are taught every day in Willow Class. Teachers and teaching assistants lead phonics session in differentiated groups. This enables us to teach phonic skills to small groups of children. Skills are taught progressively and are differentiated very closely to each child’s learning needs.

We endeavour to develop a love of reading that will stay with our children all their lives.
Children are taught to read using a variety of different strategies. We encourage children to use their phonic knowledge and comprehension skills to develop their understanding of the text. We hear our children read individually daily. We also have guided reading sessions focussing on a particular reading skill.
We use a range of books from a variety of schemes including Monster Phonics Books, Oxford Reading Tree, Phonics Bug Club and Collins Big cat. We also add other texts which are banded together to form a progressive reading scheme. Within this, children select books from different genres including information books, playscripts, poems and fiction.
