Bees

We are a school that keeps bees!

Beekeeping is an ancient and wonderful craft and without doubt brings huge benefits to keeping these fascinating insects.  We currently have two hives in the school grounds which are proving to be a valuable learning resource for our children.  The hives are managed by one of our parents, Sarah, who has several hives of her own and also our Headteacher.  Sarah often comes into school to educate the children about the bees and children have the opportunity to get "hands on" experience when monitoring the hives.

Beekeeping can be linked to every area of the curriculum, bringing learning to life but also furnishing children with a raft of life skills, such as resilience, confidence, team building and risk assessing for life, love of the outdoors and a respect and appreciation of the natural world.

We are proud to be "Friends of the Honey Bee"

Learning about our bees.

Checking for the Queen

The hives are being inspected to ensure the Queens are busy laying and the hives are in a healthy condition.

Mild weather brings out the bees!

With a period of mild weather, it is very encouraging to see the bees coming out of the hive to forage. We have also now included a screen and made the bee area better when we are working with groups of children. Looking forward to Spring!
